A couple weeks ago, Rachel posted a link to a beautiful USA magnetic map puzzle. She included a visual of America as seen by a New Yorker that had me in stitches. I’m not ashamed to say there was snort laughing involved. (Take a minute to check it out. It’s OK, I’ll wait.)
If you’re like me, New Yorker or not, you’ll admit there was at least one thing on the map that had you thinking, “yeah, how do those states fit together?” With apologies to social studies teachers everywhere — we live in a huge country, so of course we know our own regions best. We’re also quite adept at showing off that regional and hometown pride. Whether it’s the sports teams we follow, the products we buy or the art we display.
When my husband and I moved into our current home, one of the first things we had to adorn our walls was a poster celebrating our historical city neighborhood (Due credit to artist Jan Kotowicz, and to the city of Milwaukee for commissioning 27 of these cool posters.)
But it doesn’t need to be that specific. There are lots of ways — that don’t involve team colors — to show off our pride in the places we live or have lived.
Some of my favorites:
Wisconsin Collage State Print from B and A Prints, etsy.com
Missouri License Plate Clock by Starling Ink, etsy.com
Highway 94 Location #1 Photograph by Kevin Miyazaki, 20x200.com
Fox Theater, Stevens Point, Documentary Heritage Program photograph
Georgia State Dictionary Book Print by Stay Gold Media, etsy.com
So, tell me…how do you put your hometown pride on display?
(Or just assure me that I’m not alone in my lack of geography skills…)

My husband and I were recently relocated from NYC to Greenville, SC. I had learned from one of my cousins that The NYC Public Library has digitized all of the old maps and images in their collection. You can search the collection on their website and order prints of the maps that you like. I ordered a map of a 30 mile radius of New York City, a map of my husband's childhood neighborhood and a map of my childhood neighborhood. All of the maps were from 1909. Its been fun to show our daughter where we are from and, will be really nice to have something so meaningful on our living room wall. The maps are out being framed now. Pics should be up on my blog in a week or 2. www.makingitminesc.blogspot.com
