How to Organize Your Tools

by fh_jennifer on OCTOBER 19, 2011

I’m excited to have another new Fresh Face to introduce: Jennifer Jones, from IHeartOrganizing, is maybe the most organized person in the blog world — maybe in the entire world. She lives and breathes the mantra “everything has a place and everything in its place.” I wrote about her amazing stenciled wall project a while back, and I’m always pinning clever — and cute — organizing ideas from her.  Here’s Jen:

My husband and I adore a good DIY project!  Whether we are recovering a chair or hanging some wall art, you can bet that we are toting around some sort of tool. But we’re always running to the garage to snag something from the pegboard — over and over again. Then, since we stopped taking the hammers and screwdrivers back to the garage, a small pile of unorganized tools started to form on the kitchen counter near the garage door.  No good.

So when I stumbled across some great metal utensil caddies, I knew one would be the perfect solution to our troubled tool situation!

Organize Your Tools - EmptyI started out by picking all of our favorite, most frequently used DIY tools:

Organize Your Tools - ToolsWe’re always grabbing: a hammer, allen wrenches, picture-hanging hooks, drywall anchors, Philips screwdriver, flathead screwdriver, mini Philips screwdriver, utility knife, twine, picture-hanging wire, mini level, hot glue, wood glue, staple gun and staples, tape measure and pliers.

To contain the small hanging nails and screws, I used magnetic spice tins, this this way, they can just stick to the side of the caddy and keep the little things corralled neatly:

Organize Your Tools - HardwareI also love that the tape measure can just clip to the side of the caddy:

Organize Your Tools - FinishedBecause I have a special love for organizing and labels, I used my craft machine to cut out a vinyl label for the side:

Organized Tool Bin - OutsideNow we have a caddy that we can tuck on a shelf in our laundry room, yet easily tote around the house when working on projects.  No more random trips out to the cold garage to gather supplies or piles of tools left on the kitchen counter — that’s a huge win for us!

I HAVE to know where did you get that rug that is shown in the picture of the laundry room?
