Wanted: USA Magnetic Map Puzzle

by fh_rachel on SEPTEMBER 13, 2011

There’s such a thing as the United States map as seen by New Yorkers. It looks something like this:

Sadly, this is a pretty accurate depiction of what our big-city friends think of the United States. Since I’m from one of those “states that has Kansas City” (what’s up, Kansas), I might gift this USA Magnetic Map Puzzle ($120, from PipeDreams2010) to my geographically challenged NYC friends. Then they can finally learn that both states do, in fact, have a Kansas City. (But the one you’re thinking of is in Missouri.)

Map Puzzle

Map Puzzle StatesIn all seriousness, though, this magnetic map — fit perfectly for your fridge –  is a great gift for anyone with kids learning their states or anyone who simply loves geography. And it’d be fun to rearrange the states and see who can put the country back together the quickest.

OK, that map is hilarious! Since I'm also from one of the "states that has Kansas City" (yay, Kansas!), I've certainly had my fair share of conversations with people that don't understand the concept of a city spanning two states. Ah well. As long as they're not telling Dorothy jokes.

Why is the Kansas City thing so hard for people? Recently I had someone tell me how much they liked Kansas City, KS... what with the Plaza and Crown Center and all... I love the magnetic map, however I don't think the front of my fridge is big enough.

I can see the confusion, maybe, but it's really not that hard!

Or you can do it the slow way, like we do -- buying one of those magnets at at a truck stop each time we drive through a new state. So far, we only have a fairly small slice of the Midwest/West (along with an extremely out-of-proportion Florida) but it will look cool as it gets bigger.

That's a great idea -- I love that!
