Wanted: Split Decision Pie Pan

by fh_rachel on SEPTEMBER 30, 2011
Well, now isn't this clever: Next time Johnny wants apple pie and Sally wants cherry, Mom (or Dad!) can make both, thanks to the Split Decision Pie Pan ($17.95 from Spoon Sisters). I guess you just have to make pies that bake at the same temp and for the same time, huh? (Hat tip, swissmiss)

DIY Project: New Uses for Old Windows

by fh_heather on SEPTEMBER 29, 2011
I like old houses. Can't help it. The floors may creak, the insulation is insufficient and the closets always are too few and too small, but I love them. They have a personality and a life that grabs me. That's why, when we replaced all the windows on our house, I was happy that my... Read more »

Round-Up: Halloween Decorations from Etsy

by fh_rachel on SEPTEMBER 28, 2011
It's about a month from Halloween — have you decorated your house yet? I usually don't go too crazy with Halloween decor: a pumpkin here, a candy dish there. But I love these spooktacular Halloween finds from Etsy. They're cute, modern, and best of all, handmade. Here's a sample of our favorite finds from the... Read more »

‘Tis the Season: Apple Picking Tips and Apple Recipes

by fh_rachael on SEPTEMBER 27, 2011
It’s almost October, friends. Do you know what that means? It’s apple-pickin' time. Every fall without fail, hubby and I load up the kids and head out to our favorite quaint-verging-on-chaotic-this-time-of-year orchard, the Elegant Farmer in Mukwonago, Wisconsin. (They make the best apple pies in a brown paper bag, by the way, even thrashing Bobby... Read more »

IKEA Life Improvement Project – Free Trees!

by fh_rachel on SEPTEMBER 26, 2011
You guys, IKEA sent me a tree. I was as surprised as you'd be to get a tree in the mail. (Ok, it was just a seedling, so it's not as dramatic as getting, say, a Christmas tree in the mail.) But apparently, IKEA is big on trees — as we all should be. (For... Read more »

A Peek Inside the Junk Drawer

by fh_heather on SEPTEMBER 23, 2011
You don't need me to tell you that life isn't neat and tidy. No, the almost universal existence of The Junk Drawer is proof enough. And while having stuff we don't need clearly falls in the realm of “first-world problem,” it also gives the messy person in me some small joy. Underneath it all, even... Read more »

by fh_rachel on SEPTEMBER 22, 2011
It's no secret I want a dog. And when I get said dog, she'll have a Stitchable Dog Charm ($15 from AMH Design) on her collar: The kits (in both large and small sizes and various colors) come with the charm, thread, needle, needle threader and hardware to attach the charm to Fido's collar. Plus,... Read more »

Think Pink Contest – Day Three

by fh_rachel on SEPTEMBER 21, 2011
It's the final day of our YOLO Colorhouse/Fresh Home Think Pink Contest! Today we're highlighting YOLO's Sprout .06, a soft pink, which would be great in a kids' room. But it doesn't have to end in the playroom: Be bold and try using this pink as an accent to brighter hues, like orange, turquoise and... Read more »
