7 days, 7 blogs, 7 moodboards: coastal cottage porch

by fh_rachel on AUGUST 22, 2011

I’m excited to finally post my Coastal Cottage porch for Olioboard‘s 7 Days, 7 Blogs, 7 Moodboards challenge!

I played with a few ideas — modern vs. vintage, sparse vs. crowded — but in the end, I was inspired mostly by the porches I’d pinned over on Pinterest, here, here and here.

Above all, these inspiration rooms are cozy and colorful, but definitely not cluttered. (In fact, my finished moodboard was more sparse than I originally thought I’d do, but I’m ok with that.) The porch I’m drawn to is bright white, with pops of color from accessories. It’s a mix of modern and vintage. Most of all, it’s somewhere you’d want to spend time lounging with a book and listening to the ocean, preferably with a sandy dog by your side. (Although the dog didn’t make it onto the moodboard.) So, with those ideas as my guiding force, here’s what I came up with:

7 days 7 blogs 7 moodboards challenge - Coastal Cottage PorchHere’s why I chose what I chose:

  • Porch swing: I loved the color of this Polywood Horizontal Porch Swing from Fifthroom Markets ($429) and thought its heft anchored the space well. Plus, how much more coastal cottage can you get than a porch swing?
  • Planter: This Two Tier Plant Stand from Terrain ($98.95) has a nice subtle red hue, and I like how the ornate wire work contrasts the straight lines of all the other pieces.
  • Wellies: You’re at the beach — you’ll probably need these bright yellow Kids Original Boots from Hunter ($75), for the kiddos, right?
  • Adirondack chairs: Along with the porch swing, Adirondack chairs ($300) are simply classic.
  • Throw pillows: Nautical Classic Stripe Outdoor Pillows from Pottery Barn ($30) and crabs add a bit of pattern and whimsy.
  • Outdoor sconces: These Klamath Falls sconces from Rejuvenation ($195) are Craftsman-inspired, but I liked their simplicity.
  • Outdoor rug: An area rug — indoor or out — instantly anchors your space. A simple Biscayne Pecan 8×10 rug ($249) from Crate & Barrel is a neutral choice.
  • Ceiling fan: You’ll need to stay cool with a Canfield Ceiling Fan ($143).
  • Red lantern: I needed the pop of color from Stansport Kerosene Lantern, and, of course, the flickering light at dusk.
  • Side table: Apparently I love red on a white porch, and I’ve always been a big fan of brushed aluminum outdoor tables, like this Strut Side Table from Conran Shop ($299).
  • Vases: I couldn’t leave out beach glass, and these Beachglass Bud Vases from the Green Glass Co. ($28 for two) are the perfect accessory.
  • Vintage, weathered shutters: I envision chipped-paint shutters flanking all the windows on this porch, don’t you?

So, what do you think? Anything missing? Anything surprising?

What are must-haves for your coastal cottage porch?

Thanks! I love the crab pillows, too. Unfortunately I found them on Gilt and can't find the exact source, but I couldn't leave them out!

Very nice. I would place the stripe pillows on the swing because of the yellow color on the white chairs is blah. I feel a better choice for the lighting would be barn lights from barnlightelectric.com, in a galvanized or black finish. More simple and fresh looking.

Fresh! Fun!! and Ecletic!! Love the balance and use of the leading home trends: rustic finishes and painted furniture. Great slections and pops of color! Also LOVE that you incorporated using Pinteret into the design of your Coastal Cottage inspired board! I can clearly see your inspirations and interpretaion (especially from the first pin!) Sharing post over on my FB blog wall. xo Lynda

Thanks, Lynda! I'm so obsessed with Pinterest, and it's a great way to remember your inspirations, you know? I tend to say, “oh, love that porch” but then can't dig it back out again when I need. Enter: Pinterest. Between that and Olioboard, I'm set

I live in a wee house at the beach, so this is my style too! I did want to point out that those pretty little vases can't be called “authentic beach glass” unless they washed up on the beach like that but they sure are cute! Brava.

You have a good point, Margaret! They are actually recycled glass so I should amend my post. Thanks for the head's up — and glad you like it!
