cool or crazy: bubble tents

by fh_sara on MARCH 03, 2011

I hate camping. I hate absolutely everything about it. I can’t imagine a worse way to spend my free time than to spend it in the wilderness, surrounded by the wild. If you’re further interested in the multitude of reasons I abhor camping, I will refer you to my friend Jim Gaffigan. I realize, however, that I may be in the minority on this one. Some people love camping! Some people find camping to be all kinds of enjoyable fun. And I never understood why until a friend passed along a link to a story ab0ut bubble tents.

CristalBubble Hut

Wow. That doesn’t look too bad. I could maybe get behind camping if I had a nice comfy bed to sleep in, and I was safely enclosed. The website, BubbleTrees.com, describes this unique tent as “designed with the goal to offer a dreamy space without disturbing nature and the environment…Cristalbubble hut is … suited to spend an unusual night in the nature, taking advantage of a multifunction life space all year long, or even at the bottom of your garden.

Here’s a man simply relaxing on the beach. In a bubble.

I admit: They’re kind of awesome,  but also kind of weird. And wouldn’t it get hot in there? Like, if the sun is beating down on the tent, it’s gonna get steamy in there, no? Apparently, the tents come with an electric air blower, which not only helps to blow it up, but also circulates fresh air constantly, I’m assuming to keep the bubble cool as much as to help it maintain its shape.

Well this just looks delightful. How cool would it be to fall asleep looking at the stars, knowing that you’re totally safe from West Nile Virus and bears?

BubbleRoom Hut

Cozy! The downside to these is that, beyond the heat factor, they’re a tad pricey. Just one will cost you between $9,000 and $17,000, depending on whether you go for the basic CristalBubble (which is totally clear), or upgrade to a  BubbleRoom (only partially  transparent) or BubbleLodge (comes with multiple rooms).

I don’t know, guys, what do you think about these bubble tents: Cool? Or crazy?

If I had an extra 9K laying around (which will happen approximately never) I would totally own this.

I want one! Maybe my husband could convince me to go camping more often with this!

hmmm..... I'm torn. Although I like the idea of a clear tent as you would be more “one with nature”, enjoy the stars, etc., I don't like the idea that you have zero privacy. At least I can change in my tent - where do you change here? I do enjoy camping, but only for 2-3 nights. One thing I find hard to believe is the furnishings. I get the bed - a nicely decorated air mattress, but who's really going to bring in a table, nice chairs, linens, etc.? Really? Concept = cool, Reality/Practicality = Crazy.

Good point about the lack of privacy! I'm not sure i want the bears - not to mention other campers/people who may be around - to catch me in my birthday suit. Also, YES, what's with the table, chairs, lamp, and wine glasses in that last photo?! Although I guess if you can afford one of those tents, you don't mind packing up the spare crystal to take camping? Jeeves can carry it.

I would think the fan would be noisy and go against the idea that you are “closer to nature.”

I share similar sentiments about camping!! That bubble tent is SO COOL. Pretty soon everyone is going to have their own bubbles and we'll be living in a crazy world. Crazy *cool* world.
