real wedding: mike and cara’s diy wedding

DIY Wedding Alter

This weekend I was lucky enough to head up to Lutsen, Minnesota, off the shores of Lake Superior for the wedding of my friends, Mike and Cara. Cara is a DIY queen — visit her Etsy shop, Mary Marie, for her vintage finds and incredible knitted products — so I knew she’d have a bazillion DIY wedding ideas for me to share with you. She certainly didn’t disappoint!

Above, you’ll see the arbor Cara had decorated with tissue paper flowers. She used Martha Stewart’s tutorial to make about two dozen pom-poms.

How to:

1. Stack eight 20-by-30-inch sheets of tissue. Make 1 1/2-inchwide accordion folds, creasing with each fold.

2. Fold an 18-inch piece of floral wire in half, and slip over center of folded tissue; twist. With scissors, trim ends of tissue into rounded or pointy shapes.

3. Separate layers, pulling away from center one at a time. Voila!

Below, more DIY ideas for you to borrow

DIY Wedding IdeasClockwise from top left:

  • Cara knitted every guest (every single guest!) a sleeve for coffee cups, to replace the cardboard ones you usually get at coffee shops. What a waste, right? These are much more sustainable, and super cute to boot. She tied on tags made of birch bark, a nod to our North Shore location, and left them in our rooms with a goodie bag of snacks, itineraries and to-dos.
  • I loved their table numbers: pictures of the couple’s dogs, Reggie and Sadie. They’re part of the party, too, after all!
  • This might be my favorite idea: For the cake toppers, Cara painted herself, Mike and their two dogs on wooden you-paint-them dolls from Etsy. If you’re not crafty enough to do this yourself, enlist a friend who is.
  • For simple centerpieces, Cara placed mini tissue paper flowers in blue mason jars that she and her antiquing mom spent months collecting.

DIY Wedding Ideas

Clockwise from top left:

  • Mike and Cara are both amazing cooks and bakers (Mike’s known for his amazing bread baking)  so they each baked their own cakes — Mike’s was chocolate stout and Cara’s was buttermilk. They were both exceptional, and their homemade touch added to the personality of the day.
  • At the reception, the bride and groom threw down huge oversized balloons from an upstairs balcony to get the dance party going. It worked! We danced the night away.
  • At the end of the night, we took advantage of the location and had a gigantic bonfire on the shores of Lake Superior. Although not every one can take away this idea for their wedding, I loved the idea of changing into comfy clothes and relaxing with the bride and groom after a night of dancing and celebrating.
  • Rather than a guest book, guests were asked to write a piece of advice on slips of paper and hang them on clothesline.

DIY Wedding Photo Booth

Cara had her photographer set up a photo booth with props like chalkboards, more tissue paper flowers and balloons.

Luckily, Cara didn’t really have to do a lot to the ceremony site — the location provided enough amazing scenery. Any extra flowers or candles may have taken away from the beautiful setting, and it was way too windy for open flames.

Congratulations to the happy couple!

Love the cakes and the poufs (I got to help make a few, which was a nice way to participate even though I couldn't be at the event in person)! I'm planning right now- will be diying all of the decor, part of the food (apps and dessert), the dress, etc, etc both because I like to have control and because it makes it much more affordable. I'm looking forward to getting my own crafty friends and family involved!

I wish I could have sat around w/ you and Cara and Brianne making poufs I'm sure you all made great food, too! You will of course have to share pics of all your projects — your wedding will be another DIY gold mine, I'm sure. Thanks for reading!

I knew Cara's DIY abilities would shine at her wedding and I was so glad that everything turned out great for her. I was only a pouf assembly supervisor at the wedding (haha) since I don't have the magic tissue paper touch. But I do hope that she's proud of my own DIY attempts at my wedding. I've made place cards in hand-cut wine corks, cake toppers with Sculpey clay and acrylic paint, bottle cap magnet and wine cork keychain party favors, and designed and printed everything involving paper myself (invites, RSVP cards, table signs, schedules, place cards, etc.). Thanks Rachel for posting about Cara's big day. It was great to see you!

Great to see you, too, Erin! And you better send me pics of your wedding and all the DIY goodies. Good luck!

I DIYed a lot at our wedding this past May! I made the invitations, the programs, the thank you cards, about half of the tablecloths (the other half were vintage), did my own flower arrangements (wildflowers and garden flowers in collected milkglass vases), 2 ft high moss-covered initials, hand-painted signs showing where to go (outdoor ceremony), my husband and FIL built a cedar arbor for us to get married under (actually...it's the one from the summer 2009 issue of Fresh Home!), clotheslines with our baby pictures, planted wildflowers all through the field we were getting married in, attached doilies to the blue paper plates, tried making my own cake but failed and bought several small ones from Publix (saved lots of money and they were delicious!), and I'm sure there's more I'm not remembering. I spread out these projects over the year before we were married, so it wasn't as crazy and hectic as it seems!

Jaime — we'd LOVE to see your version of the arbor! And any of you other DIY projects. If you want, send ‘em to editors@freshhomemag.com. Thanks for reading!

Oh! And my FIL made a stump cake stand to hold the original wedding cake. Didn't end up using it, though! We also had a makeshift photo booth with cool fabric as the backdrop. And my veil was handmade by my great-aunt (I was the 3rd to wear it since the 60s).
