Tablecloths are certainly lovely at holiday dinners. But they have a formal feel and require special laundering afterward to get out stubborn red-wine stains! Try this more casual look instead.

Head out to tile shops or to discount home improvement stores. Be on the lookout for tiles that you can purchase individually. Select them in varying sizes and styles and in colors that coordinate with your decor. (You may also want to purchase some smaller tiles to use as coasters.)
To prevent scratches on your table, cut craft felt the same size as each tile. Following the manufacturer's instructions, spray the back of the tiles with spray adhesive. Center the felt pieces on the back of each tile; let dry. Place the tiles right side up on a cutting mat or another protected surface. Use a craft knife to trim away any felt thatshows around the edges of the tiles.
Set the tiles down the length of your table like a runner. The tiles also serve as trivets, protecting your tabletop from hot serving dishes. In addition, large tiles can be used as chargers under dinner plates.
