Step 1: Cut the Logs to Length
Step 2: Level the Tops
Step 3: Finish Them Up
Use a bow saw or chainsaw to cut the logs to length. We cut ours to 26-, 32- and 40-in. lengths, but cut yours to suit your needs. You can leave the bark in place or remove it, like we did for our project.
Set the logs upright on a flat surface, then, using a tape measure or level, mark the top of the log so it's parallel to the ground. Use these lines as a saw guide to flatten the tops of your logs.
Use a belt sander to remove any saw marks; start with 40-grit paper, then finish with 80-grit. To preserve the color, apply a clear exterior finish or preservative. Then, arrange your logs and enjoy!
