Step 1: Transfer and Enlarge the Pattern

Create a grid of 4-in. squares on one medium-density fibreboard (MDF) panel. Then, using the coordinates on the pattern, transfer the outline of the tree onto the panel. The outline doesn't need to be exact, just close.

Step 2: Cut Out the Shape

Stack the panels, pattern side up, then temporarily secure them together with drywall screws in the cutoff areas. Cut through both boards with a jigsaw. Then, sand the edges smooth with 120-grit paper.

Step 3: Cut the Interlocking Slots

Cut a 5/8-in. x 30-in. slot in each panel. On one panel the slot should come in from the bottom; on the other, from the top. Use a straight edge to help guide the jigsaw. Apply glue to the slots, then interlock the pieces. Use clamps or masking tape to hold the pieces tightly together while the glue dries.

Step 4: Caulk, Prime and Paint

Apply a bead of acrylic caulk along each joint and smooth with a finger. Apply a coat of primer and two coats of acrylic paint, let it dry thoroughly, then set your rack in place and put it to work.
