How to Make a Bookshelf Headboard

Before You Start

The headboard in this project will accommodate a double or full-size bed. If you have a queen-size bed, increase the space between the columns by 6 inches. For a single bed, reduce the space by 12 inches. Buy medium density fiberboard (MDF), not particleboard, which looks similar. MDF is more expensive, but is stronger, holds fasteners better and looks much better when painted. Use special MDF screws for fasteners. The deep threads "bite" into the material better than standard wood or drywall screws.

The MDF, screws and lights can be purchased at most home centers. Look for SPAX screws if you can't find any labeled as MDF screws. In a pinch, visit mcfeelys.com; it carries a screw for everything.

Step 1: Build the Columns

Cut the MDF fronts and sides to size, then use wood glue and 1 3/4-in. MDF screws, spaced every 10 in., to create the two columns. Predrill the holes to prevent splitting.

Step 2: Build and Install the Side Shelves

Assemble the side shelves, then secure them to the columns. Our shelves are positioned 24 in. from the floor; adjust the height of yours based on the height of your bed.

Step 3: Assemble the Top Shelf Unit

Secure the vertical dividers to the long horizontal members using glue and MDF screws. Use a framing square to ensure the unit remains square as you assemble it. If you don't have a framing square, you can use a scrap piece of MDF that's square.

Step 4: Install the Corner Brackets

Secure one leg of an L-bracket to the top of each column and the other leg to the top shelf unit to secure the components to one another. Temporarily set the headboard in place and mark the positions of the columns on the wall. Remove the headboard, secure two cleats per column to the wall (5/8-in. in from your marks), then permanently secure the headboard to the cleats.

Step 5: Build and Wire the Valance

Build the valance, then drill holes for the lights and wires. Install them based on the manufacturer's instructions. Install the valance using MDF screws. You can also use under-mount kitchen cabinet fluorescent lights and puck lights, which are easier to install.
