Step 1: Make Your Design

You can also find an already-made pattern you like. Google images and coloring books (don't laugh...the simple outlines are perfect!) both offer a wide range of choices. Use a photocopier to enlarge your image to the desired size; you may need to tape several pieces of paper together if your piece is oversized.

Step 2: Transfer the Design

Transfer the pattern onto the mesh by placing the pattern under the mesh and tracing the pattern onto the mesh with a dark felt-tipped pen. Add space for a tile border. Cut a piece of plywood the same size as, or slightly larger than, the desired size of the completed mosaic.

Step 3: Cut the Tiles

Place the mesh on plastic sheeting and secure with tape. Using tile nippers, cut tiles into small pieces to position over the design.

Step 4: Glue the Tiles to the Mesh

Secure the tiles to the mesh with a dab of all-purpose ceramic adhesive, beginning at the center and working out. Finish the background with white tile pieces, and leave to dry.

Step 4: Glue the Tiles to the Mesh[+]

TIP

Mosaic tile mesh can be purchased at mosaicartsupply.com for about 50¢/sq.ft., plus S&H. The company also sells Weldbond Mosaic Glue for gluing tiles to mesh.

Step 5: Attach the Backer Board

Mix tile adhesive and spread it on the backer board with a notched trowel. With the aid of a helper lift the mesh, position it on the backer board and press the tiles firmly into the adhesive. Apply the grout once the tiles have set.

TIP

The completed piece will be heavy, so hang it right! Attach sturdy picture hanger brackets to the backer board then hang it on the wall using hooks or wall anchors rated for the weight of the completed piece. For permanent installation, use screws to securely fasten the mosaic to a solid surface.
