Step 1: Dig a Hole for the Bucket

Make sure the lip of the plastic collar is flush with the surrounding ground and all sides are level. Line the hole with soft play sand to prevent sharp stones from puncturing the plastic.

Step 2: Wire the Pump

To wire in the pump, follow the manufacturer's instructions or call in an electrician. Outdoor electricpowered items should always be connected via a residual current device (RCD). With the pump in the base, fill the reservoir with water and test until you get the right flow.

Step 3: Cover the Top and Decorate

When you are happy with the timing and flow of the water, cover the top with the lid and add your chosen decorations.

Possible ideas for decoration include pebbles, gravel and large cobblestones. You also could run a hose from the pump through a glazed terra-cotta ball with a hole drilled in the top. Or, fit the pump with a spray attachment and hide it with pots of perennials that are happy when wet, such as Siberian iris, moneywort and marsh marigold.
