Craft a pretty paper cone from patterned card stock. Cut a circle about the size of a dinner plate, and punch a hole in each side to tie on a decorative ribbon handle. (You can line the cone with waxed paper to keep the card stock dry.) Fill with a mix of green and yellow beans for bean salad, or choose roasting veggies such as asparagus and small peppers.
Breathe new life into a pretty flea-market or mismatched teacup as a mini container for herbs. You could select a blend of tea herbs (chamomile, mint, lemon balm and thyme) or a mix of culinary herbs (rosemary, oregano, basil and parsley) that can be cut as needed. If you choose one or two low-growing herbs, you can pot them; put taller or multiple plants in water. Label the herbs using a flag made from a toothpick and paper.
Who could resist this tasty twist on a floral arrangement? Start with a shapely glass container like a simple glass jar, a quirky vase from a garage sale, a vintage milk bottle—the possibilities are endless. Fill at least halfway with cherry tomatoes to mimic floral pebbles. Tuck in sprigs of tomato-loving herbs in water vials or a small glass. We used different types of basil; parsley and dill would work, too. Or design your own combination. Tie on a jaunty ribbon and a recipe for a simple tomato dish such as Caprese salad or bruschetta.
Turn the new strain of vividly colored colanders into fast gift packages for such medium-size veggies as peppers, potatoes, carrots, beets and summer squash. We filled this one with potatoes and shallots and tied a bundle of herbs on the side to provide the makings for potato salad. Add a simple tag or ribbon for the finishing touch.
