Step 1: Prepare the Surface

Fill cracks and holes with wood putty, let harden, then lightly sand all surfaces with 180-grit sandpaper. Use a tack cloth to remove dust.

Step 2: Apply the Paint

Thin oil-based, black satin paint about 10 percent with mineral spirits, then apply a smooth coat, brushing in one direction.

TIP

Remove drawers and paint them separately. Flip table upside down and paint the legs and underside before flipping the table upright to finish.

Step 3: Apply the Polyurethane

Let the paint dry according to manufacturer directions, then lightly sand and remove dust with a tack cloth. Apply a coat of high-gloss, oil-based polyurethane. Lightly sand and repeat procedure for third coat if desired.
