Project by Gema Beneitez

Intro

The 540 x 1000mm Gladesville decal that we used on these stairs is a design from Stencil Gallery, $75, (www.stencilgallery.com.au). It's large enough to be divided into pieces and positioned over the risers without compromising the finished setout.

TIP

Make your own stencils by cutting out designs from a piece of cardboard or sheet of plastic.

Step 1: Prepare the Stairs

Smooth the staircase with 120-grit abrasive paper using a random orbital sander to smooth over the old paint. Then apply two coats of water-based, high-gloss paint.

TIP

The paint takes about two days to dry completely.

Step 2: Cut the Design to Fit

Use sharp scissors to cut the decal to fit the risers, removing leaves to make it fit neatly.

Step 3: Attach the Decal

Position the decal on a flat surface with the design face down to peel off the paper backing to reveal the sticky side. Press it firmly onto the stairs then peel off the clear protective layer on the front.

TIP

Use a fine paintbrush and an oil-based paint in the same color as the design to touch up any joints or fill out the design.
