Before You Start

Remove the panes of glass from a pair of doors destined for the landfill. Every door is different, in size and construction. We needed to pry off the old glass panels, but your panes may be held in place with putty. For most doors, you'll need only a 1/4-in. x 4-ft. x 4-ft. panel of plywood. Purchase enough fabric to cover the panels plus an extra 3 in. on each side for wrapping around the back. Use a heavy-duty staple gun to secure the finished panels to the doors.

Step 1: Cut the Parts to Size

Once the glass is removed, measure the opening; then, use a utility knife to cut the 1/4-in. plywood panels to size. Use a straightedge and several passes for the crispest cut, then sand the edges.

Step 2: Cut and Attach the Fabric

Cut fabric 3 in. larger on all sides than the panel. Apply spray adhesive to the panel then position the fabric. Fold the edges back and secure them with double-sided tape.

Step 3: Attach the Plywood

Secure the plywood panels to the backs of the doors using a staple gun. Set the staple gun square to the plywood, and keep the base flat while pulling the trigger with steady pressure.
